Contemporay Art created using Traditional Techniques

These pictures are all recent works. They are painted using egg as a medium to bind pure pigment, this forms egg tempera. I make the paint as I work rather than keeping a store of it. The grounds are made from MDF board coated with around 8 coats of gesso, made in the traditional way by disolving 'Whiting' into hot rabbit skin glue, a very aromatic process. Once dry the gesso, which is really a very fine plaster, is sanded by hand to give a smooth surface resembling ivory in its appearance.

The subjects are almost like film sets populated by characters drawn from life, from friends and family. There may be an underlying story or an emotion that I'm trying to convey, but I generally like the works to be slightly ambiguous.
